The .SE country-code extension was started in 1986 and assigned to Sweden. During the first years after its launch, the registration procedure was very restrictive, so a very small number of domain names were registered. Individuals were allowed to secure no more than one domain under .PP.SE (“pp” stands for “private person”). Local presence was required, i.e. only Swedish persons, businesses and organizations could obtain a dot SE domain. In 2003, however, the registration process was liberalized considerably and, as a consequence, the number of .SE domains has been mounting each year.
